Painters @ Painters 2013

Every May long weekend for the last 19 years prominent artists have gathered together at Painters Lodge. To become one of the members there is a process where you must apply and then be ‘voted in’ by the core group. There are unfortunately, member artists that have passed on in the last 20 years and they are the ‘who’s who in the zoo’ of BC art. Each year a new artist is chosen to balance the attrition. One way orRead more

‘Trickster’

Years ago, I dreamt about a jet black raven the evening we discovered the petroglyths on the sandstone beaches of Hornby island. My young family and I spent our summers on that island. It was a wonderful time for the Lynch tribe. A time full of possibility, freedom and growth. Hornby island is as exotic a place as I have ever experienced. Nobody truly understands the purpose and meaning of the 500 plus year old etched symbols and marks. PossiblyRead more

‘Myra Falls’ Strathcona Park, BC Canada

Knowing that I love rocks and water, a repeating subject of my work, a friend of mine mentioned a series of falls in Strathcona Provincial Park. We finally made our way up there last summer and I was not disappointed. Myra Falls is arguably the most magical landscape on the island; a bold statement to make on the island of magical landscapes. The Pocahontas falls undulate down three or four levels into Buttle Lake. They are a short walk inRead more

‘Madre’

I just completed this large canvas entitled ‘Madre’; an ode to the Mexican Baja. The oceans, deserts and mountains down here always confront me with mystery and wonder. (very different from the north west)  The history of the most prominent icon in Mexico ‘Our Lady of Guadalupe’ or as the natives call her ‘Tecuatlanopeuh’ (she whose origins were in a rocky summit) is a great read (google) It may help explain my madness. The image of ‘Our Lady of Guadalupe’Read more

A Few Days On the East Cape, BCS

I went out to East Cape to see my friends Brent and Betty Heighton the other night and was impressed at the minimal beauty of the area. I really never spent much time out that way. Along with Jon Einersson, we drove out to Zakatitos, told bigger than life stories over dinner, margaritas and watched a fine sunset. The next day I just had to drive out there again and even further around to Cabo Pulmo and painted these pleinRead more

Big Cliffs, Small Falls….plein air weekend

I’ve been in the studio too long and made a break for the outdoors this weekend. My son Kyle was with me filming the madness for some potential youtube shorts etc. We had a good time roaming my favorite haunts around mid island. Saturday was a little stormy but dramatic. It is the best time of year for plein air in my opinion because you’re the only idiot out there so you are left to the task. There’s a spookyRead more

‘Old Casa’ Dec. 17th, 2012

For the last 20 years or so I’ve made an annual pilgrimage to my favorite old casa ruins. They are located in a small mining town high on the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains. Every passing season I have witness the erosion and decay of these beauties. I will not be surprised but sad when they fall to the elements…..and they will. To me they represent the history and character of the region and I cannot leave them alone. TheRead more

Back In The Saddle

First few days back from Cabo and I found myself at ‘The Old School House’ (Qualicum) Friday morning ‘Life Drawing Session’. I haven’t been for awhile so it was good to do something for art’s sake. I do miss it, life drawing being the perfect compliment to painting. If the weather is thick as it was today just get to your local group drawing sessions or the next best thing; draw your loved ones…they work cheap. below; french chalk onRead more

A Dark Night

I just arrived home to the snow. I was away in Los Cabo delivering some paintings for the up and coming tourist season. I justify the trip because of the current high cost of shipping art as it can be as much as an airline ticket. It isn’t true of course but courier cost are high enough for the excuse to work for me. I had a mini-show at the Ida Victoria Gallery last Thursday night but it was theRead more
