Behind the Scenes: “The Creative Process”

a short film in the making by Natthan Davis

Director’s Notes

“After visiting a bunch of spots on Vancouver Island, I can really say that it won’t be hard capturing the natural beauty. The trick will be doing so in a elegant way as I mesh it with the art in which it has inspired .”

Day 5&6: Scouting locations

As a film maker, it is rather difficult to know how to best approach shooting a scene without a little fore knowledge. So Brent was nice enough to take us to a few of his favourite spots to paint, and let us fool around with angles and come up with ideas.

Artist’s Notes

“I love painting from a direct experience, so the last few days has been quite enjoyable. I believe Natthan got a way better idea of what that means, by joining me on a few adventures.”

Director’s Notes

“The informal interview, really helped me understand Brent and his motivations. I think this will really help me pinpoint a strong narrative for the documentary.”

3&4: Interview and Audio

It is always easier to have some audio to play with when it comes to film making. We used Brent’s studio for our test interview and I am happy to report it should really work for our purposes. Its not always easy to find a quiet place, that works both acoustically and visually, the organic mess of a working artist is just really interesting. I look forward to playing more in the space.

Artist’s Notes

“Natthan, put me in the hot seat but it is always good to think more deeply in regards to the classic questions of how, what, who, when, where. Along with the deeper stuff, like desire, hope and joy.”

Director’s Notes

“Was a good day figuring out angles and lighting for Brents Studio. Looking forward to putting together a solid storyboard with all the locations that I was able to scout over the past two days.”

Day 1&2: Ironing Out the Concept

A Big part of developing any piece of art is to come up with a rough sketch by throwing ideas at the wall or in this case paper and see what sticks. This was a big part of our first get together and we hashed out some really great ideas along with scouting and trying out some locations on film.

Artist’s Notes

“Going to take a bit of time to get used to the filming process but had a lot of fun working with Natthan. Look forward to seeing what he comes up with.”
