En Plein Air, Field Studies

‘En plein air’ is a French phrase meaning “in the open air” and has come to be known today as outdoor painting or field studies. Artists have long painted outside but in the mid-1800’s, working in natural light became accessible as technology in paint became more portable. In the tradition of direct landscape painting Lynch’s work begins with sketches and oil studies done outdoors on location. He shares the landscape artist’s love of the outdoors and attempts to capture it with liberal paint application, dramatic brushstrokes and powerful compositions.
